Tariff guide
Flexible Octopus
The standard variable tariff
Flexible Octopus is the default tariff. It's what you'll be on if you switch to Octopus without specifically choosing one of their smart tariffs. Honestly, for a lot of people, it's all you need.
How it works
It's simple. You pay a single flat rate per kWh for electricity, a single flat rate for gas, plus daily standing charges for each. The rates are variable, meaning Octopus can change them, but in practice they only shift when the Ofgem price cap changes each quarter.
No smart meter required. No time-of-use pricing. No need to think about when you use your energy. You just use it, and the rate is the same whether it's 3am or 6pm.
What does it cost?
The exact rate depends on your region, but Flexible is consistently priced at or just below the Ofgem price cap. That might not sound exciting, but remember that the cap is what most other suppliers charge. Being below it, even by a small amount, adds up over a year.

Who is it for?
- Anyone who just wants a straightforward deal. No faffing about with off-peak windows or wholesale prices. Just a good rate.
- Households without smart meters. Most of the other tariffs need one. Flexible doesn't.
- People who can't shift their usage. If you can't run the washing machine at midnight, the smart tariffs won't help you much. Flexible gives you the same rate all day.
The trade-off
You won't save as much as you could on a smart tariff. If you've got an EV, a heat pump, or a battery, there are better options. If you're the type who'll happily run appliances overnight to chase cheaper rates, Agile or Go will save you more. If you just want to switch and forget about it, though, Flexible is solid.
Bottom line
Flexible Octopus is a perfectly good tariff. It beats what most other suppliers offer on their standard deals, and it doesn't require any lifestyle changes. Think of it as the safe choice. Not the most exciting, but reliable and competitive.
