Common questions

Is the £50 credit real?
Yes. Octopus Energy runs an official refer-a-friend programme. When you sign up through a referral link, both you and the person who referred you get £50 added to your energy account. It's not a voucher or a discount code. It's actual credit that comes off your bills.
When do I get the £50?
The credit usually shows up about four weeks after you switch. Octopus waits until your supply is active and your first Direct Debit payment goes through. After that, the £50 lands in your account automatically.
Can I use a referral code if I switch through a comparison site?
No, and this is really important. If you switch to Octopus through Uswitch, GoCompare, or any other comparison site, the referral credit won't apply. You need to go directly through the referral link to get your £50. That's why I always recommend clicking the link on this page rather than going through a comparison site.
What if I've already started signing up?
If you haven't finished yet, start fresh by clicking the referral link on this page. If you've already completed your signup without a referral link, contact Octopus and give them the referral code (solemn-boat-668). They can usually add it retrospectively, as long as you signed up directly through their website rather than via a comparison site.
Is there a catch?
Genuinely, no. Octopus uses referral credits as a way to get new customers. It costs them less than paying a comparison site, so they pass the saving on to you and to me. You get £50, I get £50. The only requirement is that you stay with Octopus long enough for your first Direct Debit to go through.
